The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: For Greg and Ken...ANV flags at Vicksburg

A friend replied to their Facebook page and asked why no battle flags were shown etc. The first reply from Vicksburg NPS is as follows: "Hi Meigs. At Vicksburg the Confederate Army fought under the First National Flag of the Confederacy....Since the battle flag did not fly here at Vicksburg we do not have any." NPS was then asked, "Did it not fly or be carried by some units during the siege of Vicksburg?"..... Here is the reply verbatim from Vicksburg NPS: "The Army of Mississippi, renamed the Army of Tennessee, did not receive battle flags until Joseph E. Johnston took over the command of the army after its defeat at the Battles of Chattanooga in November 1863. Johnston took command at the end of December 1863 and early 1864, a means of reinvigorating the morale of the army, had flags similar to the Army of Northern Virginia's battle flag issued to his command. Many of these regiments, having fought under variations of flags for the particular state, brigade, division and corps, decided to retain their original colors. These would be considered the Hardee and Polk flags among other variations. As far as Pemberton's army in 1863, due to the fact that many of these units were from Louisiana and Mississippi and had limited exposure outside of the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, they carried a variety of company, state, secession and national banners, none of which were the standard AoNV battle flag.".......

In an attempt to cover any possibility of these flags they further responded: "The 4th Mississippi a unit that was attached to Bowen's bridge defense at Big Black, and assigned to Baldwin's brigade of Smith's division was serving along the north side of the park's defenses. This flag (not sure which one they are referencing here ARushing) was a late war banner issued when the 4th MS was assigned to Army of Tenn after their official exchange from being captured at Vicksburg with the rest of the Army of Tenn in early 1864 and was captured at the Battle of Nashville by the 5th Minnesota Infantry. We appreciate your concern for history and Vicksburg National Park will continue to represent all sides and tell all of the perspectives from the Civil War. Thank you for your comments. From NPS."

So no name signed the reply.......so, Greg, as you can see, they have this PC and misguided message that it was never there, all so they do not have to provide examples that might be upsetting and traumatizing to park visitors I guess. Now what kind of historians does the NPS put to work at our national battlefields. Before long they will say they were not at Gettysburg as well!
