Ken is correct - John Coski's book is the best current source for this ANV flag creation. Please note that one myth was that the CS War Department signed off on the flag - they had zip to do with it. This flag's creation is still surrounded by a great deal of mythology - like St. Andrew of Scotland had a lot to do with the cross on the flag when William Porcher Miles, the design's creator in February 1861, called it the "saltier of heraldry," which it was.
