Re: 5th Co. Washington Artillery 2nd Nat. Flag

Several things. Frst, my G.G. Grandfather was in the 5th Co. He is the man standing in the middle of the large group photo before Shiloh. He is also the man sitting on the table of the famous photo of those 6 men in front of the tent. His name was John H Smith. He was Sgt. of drivers and later gunner on piece #1. I have been doing living history for the park service and reenacting for over 40 years and I have made the 2nd Company ANV flag, the Hardee flag of the 5th and I am making this 2nd National flag which was the last flag the 5th carried. . The curator of the LA State museum was kind enough to send me the data sheet on the flag but it is very short in details. The Austin Sharpshooter flag is a "sister" of the 5th Co. flag and it too is hard to tell if the letters were on both sides. The Hardee flag does have the letters on both side though I assume it was done in the field based on the straight stitches ( not something a seamstress would do). Belknaps wife did the letters on the flags and they look to be whip stitched. Send me an email address and I will send the photos of the flags of the Washington Artillery I have made.
Best Tim
