That had not been posted here until now. I found a clipping of this
correspondence in the Library of the MOC. Nice to have a easy
to read copy. The Aug. 21 date should read 24th.
A clue as to how the yanks got the flag is contained in the Sept.
11, 1861 issue of the Natchez Daily Courier (pg.1)
"We learn from a letter from Joseph F. Griffing, of the Tensas Rifles,
to the Tensas Gazette, that the wagoner who was entrusted with the
flag of that Company, deserted and carried it as a trophy to the enemy"
