Re: Botetourt Virginia Light Artillery Flag

According to Sgt Obenchain of the battery in a 1904 letter
the battery did not use a Virginia State flag at the siege
of Vicksburg, but rather a "battleflag" which was taken by
two federal officers on July 4, 1863.
There was a State flag bearing the name "Anderson's Battery" on both sides. This flag was cut up on the nite of the 3rd and distributed to the men of the battery. The State flag, because of the name inscribed on it, was NOT used during the siege. It had been made of Mrs. Captain Anderson's wedding dress and presented to the battery in May 1861.
