Re: Battle-honors for the 55th Illinois

Dear Bjorn:
The regimental history of the Fifty-Fifth was reprinted several years ago by Blue Acorn Press. It may still be available through their website, or used through Amazon.com or Ebay. The regiment participated in the battles of Shiloh, Arkansas Post, Chickasaw Bluffs, Vicksburg, Chattanooga and Atlanta. The appendix in the back of the book lists the members of the regiment, and there is nothing to indicate a large presence of Swedes. In fact, quite to the contrary, the book makes it clear that the vast majority were native-born Americans, and the majority of the surnames are of English origin. Their colonel, Oscar Malmbourg, was an immigrant and former Swedish officer. The men of the regiment generally did not like him, considering him incompetant and something of a martinet. In 1864, most refused to re-enlist unless he was replaced (which was done).
