I had an opportunity to visit the Appomattox Court House visitor center, where the 61st Virginia flag is hung; it has a "61.VA" in prominent white characters at the upper center. Separately shown is a small red fragment from the flag of the 23rd Virginia which was said to have been torn up and distributed among the remaining men at Appomattox. This fragment had belonged to Private John J. McCargo. Is anything known about the latter flag, specifically into which battles had it previously been carried?
