Hello Sir, I have found info that says they did, did'nt and unknown on the 56th Pa's flag. I am leaving it at "not captured". The book "Gettysburg 1" from the Ospery collection is the only book I have read that claims the 2nd Ms captured the 56th Pa's. I have emailed the Pa people about this and they say that flag was not captured. From the book "Advance the colors" (2 books on all Pa regiment's flags). They also mention that the flag was not captured. The 56h Pa did lose a flag at 2nd Manassas to the 6th nc. I also checked with "Cutler's brigade at Gettysburg".
As far as the 149th Pa, I think some of these big Pennsylvania regiments must have carried 3 flags.
The 55th Virginia took the 149th Pa's national flag. The 55th Va also claims to have captured another flag, Capt. Brockenbrough's company "D" adjutant Williams claimed the flag. What the flag was, is a huge question mark.
The 42nd Ms took the 149th Pa's State flag.
The time was around 3:15pm on Day 1 when the 149th Pa lost their flags.
The 150th Pa lost a flag. Brockenbourgh's report on Gettysburg says his brigade took 3 flags.
I believe these flags were not faught over, Brockenbrough's brigade was not very offensive minded at Gettysburg on Day 1. Only when Daniel and Pender attack did they attack.
The 55th Va lost 40 k/w day 1. Day 3....7 men lost. They did not fight on Day 2. From the book "55th Virginia by Richard/O'Sullivan"
There is a ton of information on Confederate flags captured at Gettysburg. There are at least 10 missing (mostly sent home, not to the war department)
As for the Union's flags captured, in the OR's only 2 regiment's admit losing a flag. The 3rd Maine and the 11th US regulars.
This is a tough nut to crack. Any help or info is surely welcomed.
Have a good night, Sir
Shawn
