The 72nd Illinois was knocked off the main line along with the 50th Ohio during the initial assault. The 111th Ohio, the regiment to the right of the 72nd Illinois, was forced to refuse its left flank just to somewhat connect with the troops who had rallied on the retrenched line. When Johnson attacked at 7 p.m. the 72nd Illinois and 50th Ohio were not on the main line.
With all due respect, Sharp did not capture the 72nd Illinos flag. His men, and the rest of those in Johnson's Division, largely confront the 111th Ohio, 107th Illinois, 129th Indiana, 23rd Michigan, and 118th Ohio.
