The late Professor T. P. Williams' book on Davis' Brigade is a generally excellent source from a standpoint of research, but apparently even he was confused with respect to the flag incident on July 1st. As previously discussed, although members of the 2nd and 42nd Mississippi regiments were involved with the capture of a flag of the 149th PA at the "pile of rails," no primary accounts I have come across mention anything of a flag capture involving the fight with the 56th PA of Cutler's Brigade.
