The 13th Wisconsin also did guard duty but chased guerrillas too. The 83rd Illinois was the same way.

Loads of these regiments were rear area duty and that was very important for keeping open the supply lines to the main armies. The Confederates were very good at closing those for a couple years until the Union could put more troops into their rear areas.
