Here is some more information on the 8th Mississippi Infantry. I was lucky enough to get a copy of Madaus’ book on the AoT’s Flags. At the Battle of Murfreesboro, the 8th fought under Hardee in Breckenridge’s Division. Madaus states that all units under Hardee would have had the “hardee battle flag” pattern at this time. It is also noteworthy to say that the 8th could have had the “Polk battle Flag” while in Wither’s Division under Polk before their reassignment to Hardee’s corps. At the Battle of Chickamauga, the 8th fought under Cheatham’s Division under Polk’s Right Wing, and then fought under Hardee Corps at Chattanooga while still under Cheatham. It is still unclear to me what flags they would have had at these two battles… The 8th was also noted for fighting under Walker’s Division, 1st Corps in Gist’s Brigade(temporarily), Cleburne’s Division in Lowery’s Brigade (at Franklin).. I believe by this time they would have had the standard August Depot Flag, but again it is possible they could have had “Cleburne’s Battle Flag” while at Franklin. All this is just a good guess; if anyone with more knowledge,please elaborate more on this subject.
