Re: Texas Civil War Museum - Flags Photos

Matthew,

The "brigade" flag for Ector's Brigade did not see action at Chickamauga for the reason that this pattern of Richmond Depot made ANV battle flag did not exist until May, 1864!

This is a Fourth Bunting issue battle flag and they first saw action in May/June, 1864. It is for one of the Texas regiments of Ector's Brigade. For quite some time we wondered how these Eastern battle flags ended up out West until Robert Maberry in his excellent book "Texas Flags" found out that one of Ector's officers was in Richmond in May, 1864 and got four of these flags to bring West with him. All four of the flags still exist too; one in private hands and the rest in museums.

The two NC regiments of his brigade used a different pattern battle flag - the 12 star flags from the Mobile Depot. These were issued in early 1864.

Thanks for posting the pictures.
