Re: The holcombe legion

I'm about 7 months late coming into this thread, but I stumbled across it while searching for information about the Legion.

I recently viewed the military record of my g-grandfather who enlisted in the Legion in Newberry, SC in Jan 1862. He was stationed at Camp Hampton in Columbia, wounded at Sappony Church in 1864, captured at Five Forks on April 3, 1865, and interned at Point Lookout, MD for the rest of the war.

While at Camp Hampton he came down with "country fever" and went back to Newberry to recuperate. Upon return, he spent another month ill in camp. Does anyone know what "country fever" was? Could it have been malaria, yellow fever, or something like that?
