Re: 1st Alabama Volunteers Flag Returned

Greg is correct. The flag is that of the 1st Alabama Infantry. It was made in Montgomery between March 4, and April 12, 1861 and presented to them at Ft. Barrancas near Pensacola. They fought under the flag during the bombardment of Ft. Pickens on November 22-23, 1861. As a result they were allowed to add a battle honor to the flag for these dates. Within the circle of seven stars on the canton, is a map of the state of Alabama on a scroll (similar to the period coat of arms often incorrectly called the state seal). Yesterday, I discovered something really interesting about the map. It shows their route from Montgomery to Pensacola. We hope to take the flag to the conservator this summer. The flags of the Perote Guards and the Wilcox True Blues (companies in the 1st Alabama) have already been conserved. The addition of this flag brings our (ADAH) total to 90. We returned one flag to Arkansas about six years ago and recently exchanged the flag of the 7th Georgia for the flag of the Ft. Browder Roughs (Co.D, 15th Alabama Infantry.) Greg, thanks you for emailing the folks in Nebraska. They were very gracious and professional. Once they found out that the flag was from Alabama they immediately made plans for its return. This is how museums should cooperate. I encourage you all to drop them a line and thank them.
