I am researching the 23rd Illinois Infantry. At 2nd Kernstown on Julk 24, 1864 they lost half their number. In August they were consolidated into five Companies and designated "Battalion 23rd Regiment Illinois Veteran Volunteers." Prior to and during Kernstown they carried a two sided green flag as a full regiment. After consolidation, would they still be authorized a regimental standard? I have found no mention of orders relating to this issue in th OR or Hardees or anything else I have managed to get my hands on. Can anyone help?
