The OR reported no Union flags were captured at Sharpsburg/Antietam, that myth has just been busted.

I spent 4 hours today at the Library of Congress, enjoying the week off. I came across "Battle Flags Captured" Returned battle flags from the War Department by O.W Bennett.

The 17th Virginia with (58 men in the regiment) captured the regimental flag of the 103rd New York. The 17th Virginia lost 29 men or 50% of thier tiny "regiment".

The microfilm number is: 44551E, I highly recommend anyone to check that out. It listed 60 Union flags captured and returned back to their respective states. At least 250 more were unidentified. The microfilm did not show the 250ish Union flags that were unidentified.

Most of the Confederate flags I pretty much knew. Tommrow, I shall check for anything on the 11th Corps captured flags at Gettysburg if it takes all day.

Another mission is to find a 12th Corps flag since they say they never lost one. I always say "There has to be one".

I have my eyes out for the 8th Pa reserves at Sharpsburg as well. The 6th Nc was fighting against the 8th Pa reserves and did drive them back. In John Micheal Priest's book "Antietam The Soldiers Battle" on page 65 all the way down Priest said "The colors were nowhere to be seen" (Meaning the 8th Pennsylvania reserves). That just raises an eyebrow with me.

If anyone has anything on the 8th Pa reserve flag/flags at Antietam please let me know.

Charles, I shall "try" to count up all the flags I have listed captured, this will be a long adventure lol. I will do it though, I hope we can work together in the future.
