After looking at the list of 58 Union flags that were returned by the War Department, one was listed as the "1st Maine, regimental, 2nd brigade, 4th Divison."

At first I thought this flag was captured at 1st Manassas and then I realized that the 1st Maine "infantry" regiment did not even fight at 1st Manassas. It had remained in Washington City during the battle.

So now I am curious to what "1st Maine" flag was captured.

Do they mean the 1st Maine Cavalry? 1st Maine Heavy Artillery? 1st Maine Vetern Infantry (5,6,7 Maine) (Consolidated)

It certainly was not the 1st Maine Infantry, this regiment lost no men in their 90-day service.
