Very very helpful information sir. I read that at least 250 more Union flags were captured and unidentified. I have tracked down hundreds of Union flags captured, but the biggest problem is of that "250 flags" recaptured and trying to figure out if any of the Union flags I have listed captured were sent to Richmond. At least 300 Union flags were captured at the very least. The 250 unidentified flags and the 58 indentified flags makes 308.
Tracking Union flags are very difficult, very few times Union commanders admit to losing a flag. For an example read the Union OR report at Gettysburg, out of all of those regiments only two regimental commander admitted losing a flag. Two....what? The 3rd Maine (National) and the 11th US.Regulars. I dont know if it was out of pride or they just did'nt want to admit they lost a flag.
I have scanned the entire 128 vols of the OR books. The best way to do that is buy the CD. Go to each Vol and hit edit, then this page only, type in say "flag, flags, colors" bingo!! Much faster way then trying to read 128 OR books. I collect rare Confederate Veterns magazines, all the Civil War magazines out on the market, books, regimental histories here and there, I try to search everywhere for information on captured flags.
This site is a huge help. Anything I find, this is the first place I go to share that information. Gregg and Jim are masters on historal flags. I really appreciate them helping me find the fake flags on ebay and other auctions. I would love to get my hands on a real flag but not trying to pay 100,000 for a flag. I'd have to get all my kids working, wait that is a pretty good idea..
Have a good night, sir
