The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: CSA flags returned by the War Department

I just got done reading Noah Andre Trudeau book "The Last Citadel" on page 375 I found this interesting.

The 6th Corps had broke through at Petersburg on April 2nd, 1865.

"Portions of Lane's, MacRae's, McComb's and Nelson's brigades were pinned on the north bank of Hatcher's Run. Most made their way across, but not all. The 11th Mississippi scattered in a panic. A few of the men made their escape by swimming the stream. Frank hope, the color bearer (11th Mississippi) tore the flag of the regiment into shreds, tied them to the flag-staff and threw them into Hatcher's Run. About this time the regiment was entirly surrounded and all the members surrendered."

So now I ask, if that flag was tore up and thrown in Hatcher's run, did the 11th Mississippi have another flag that was not tore up and would that be the flag that was captured? Did they have two flags or one?

Have a good evening,

Shawn
