Notwithstanding, the claim by Colorbearer Franklin Hope that the unit's flag was destroyed rather than captured at Hatcher's Run on April 2, 1865; there remains a 3rd bunting issue flag in private hands that was captured at Hatcher's Run on April 2, 1865. This flag is complete with
battle honors and unit designation.
It was taken on April 2, 1865 by the 123rd Ohio Infantry
and remains in the hands of the commanding officer's family today.
