The flag taken by the 12th West Virginia was captured at Battery Gregg, not Hatcher's Run. The after-action report of this unit clearly states as much. That flag which the War Department designated as number 285 could only belong
to the 12th or 16th Mississippi. More likely that of the 16th.
The flag of the 26th Miss Inf was numbered 289 and lies in private hands at this time. It was captured by the 148th NY
and was until recently incorrectly id'd as belonging to the 8th Miss. Inf.
