Here is a brief note found in the Confederate Military History, Extended Addition, vol. IV Virginia, p. 756: Orderly Sergeant James Peyton Britton, Capt. Thomas M. Garrett's company [F, 5th NC Infantry]. On July 1, he wrapped the flag around his arm and carried it from the field.
