Confederate Military History, Extended Addition is a multi-volume series that contains brief biographies on soldiers of all ranks who served in the war and their pre- and post-war activities. It is a fairly common reference found in larger libraries or institutions with a good collection of Civil War materials. The original work, Confederate Military History, is sometimes found instead, but the Extended Addition is a modern reprinting with additional content. Each volume is typically devoted to one state, but a soldier who moved to another state might be missed. Soldiers are listed in alphabetical order, so in order to focus on a particular unit, a painstaking search has to be made through the entire work, but I have found it to be a very valuable and interesting reference, with occasional unique information.
