Perhaps this might help, taken from the presentation of the flag presented to Co. B of the 43rd Tennessee at Sulphur Springs, Tenn., Oct. 31, 1861:

"I trust 'tis enough that it is the true flag of the South;
the Striking Colors --red, white, and blue--
the proud emblems of love, purity and fidelity-- "
