To dovetail what you have said about that Australian flag, I have seen several period Southern newspapers wondering why the ANV battle flags were called "Southern Cross" when that celestial constellation was not visible in the Northern Hemisphere!

The constellation does form a St. George's Cross. Nice details about saltires on flags by the way.
