I have seen two versions of his report on the battle, one version A. Moore showed me many years ago and one of Wheat's relatives sent me a version and he is the one that told me that there were three versions of Wheat's report.
The two I have seen are very similar, with little difference between them and I would think the third is close to the first two.
The second version of Wheat's report that I got a photo copy of came from the same person who donated Wheat's painting to the Confederate Museum in New Orleans. He also sent me a color photo of the painting that was printed on the cover of Dufour book on Wheat.
I also talked with Charles L. Dufour about these reports back in 1982-3 range, I'm sure I sent him a copy of the report.
Also check into Burnside's later writings, somewhere in all my boxes of stuff I found a later writing by him that will clear up this matter (not about the flag, but the very early action of the battle.)
ps I sent Terry Jones a copy of Kelly's book on Port Repubic, which was too late to be used in his book on Lee's Tigers.
