Hello Jeff,

Some (few) of the Battle flags from the Charleston Depot used cloth / muslin (bunting) button whole tabs. Most of the tabs did not last long and the flags were secured to the staff by tacks or rope through the sleeve or ties in the field.

2nd National flags, if silk, those that survive were finished with a sleeve header with ties. On the Mobile Depot bunting 2nd National’s, those that survive were finished with a cloth / canvas or bunting header with two or more whipped eyelets.

The Mobile Depot Battle flags, those that survive, usually have the leading edge folded over to form a sleeve with ties for attachment. In the field some of the flags were attached by tacks to the staff when the ties failed.

Happy Trails!

Tom Martin
