The Civil War Flags Message Board

Perryville, Union flags captured

Ironic, the book that I found a few Union flags captured is on the far left of this message board.

"Perryville"--"This Grand Havoc of Battle" by Kenneth W. Noe.

On page 242/243, the 33rd Ohio lost their National flag after fight Wharton's Cav. Somehow the 5th Tenn inf (CSA) captured the flag and tore it to shreds and handed out the souvenirs to members of the 5th Tenn and General Polk was on the scene.

On page 302, the 22nd Indiana (during the night fight) had and I will quote "Instinctively, the survivors retreated from the Arkansans and collapsed back across the Benton Road and into a cornfield, losing their shredded colors in the process".

Mr. Noe does not mention to who captured the "colors" but Liddell's Arksansas brigade was there and did fire the shots at night time.

I also found that the 22nd Indiana lost a "color" at Murfressboro to the 2nd Arkansas. Ironically, the same regiment that poured in deadly volleys at Perryville into the 22nd Indiana.
