Re: Union flags captured - First Manassas

I always thought the 69th New York lost two flags on the retreat chased down by Confederate cavalry under Radford. In the OR report everyone mentions Radford's cavalry as capturing many flags on the retreat.

Now as far as what flag Wheat's Battalion captured, is still a big guess, nobody knows. What is known, when Wheat was wounded most of the battalion fought separately in companies rather then a battalion shoulder to shoulder.

I believe the 11th New York fire guards had to have lost a flag, I just dont the see the color bearers making off with the flags after Stuart's cavalry crashed into them and chased them down.

I posted how many artillery pieces were captured by the Confederates at 1st Manassas so a few of those flags must be artillery flags. Griffen's certainly, the rest?

Have a safe New Years,

Shawn
