Re: Ohio regiments that lost their flag at Gettysb

I never heard back from the Ohio people. They just are not going to admit losing flags. When I looked at the 25th Ohio's regimental history at the LOC, nothing at all was written about the flags. Not many Union regimental commanders admitted to losing a color. Since they did not report it in their OR report, it was never recorded on their regimental history.

Do I believe the 25th Ohio lost at least 1 flag at Gettysburg, yes. But trying to find the proof, very difficult.

I did find something interesting, the 149th Pa lost all of their flags on day 1 and was the only regiment that did. Now here is the kicker...the 149th Pa lost more then 2 flags. As we know the 55th Va and 42nd MS captured a flag each from the 149th Pa.

Perrin wrote that his South Carolina brigade captured 4 flags. The 14th SC captured another "Large flag" from the 149th Pa during the 1st Corps last stand. The 149th Pa lost three flags on day 1 at Gettysburg.

Just about every Pennsylvania regiment that was in the 1st Corps on Day 1 lost a flag. Daniel wrote that his North Carolina brigade captured hundreds of Pow's and several flags. It is well know that the 143rd Pa was the last regiment to pull out in Daniel's area. Again nothing on the 143rd Pa's flag. I also question the National flag of the 142nd Pa. Col Biddle (Brigade commander) grabbed the National flag from the 142nd, and led a charge against the left flank of the 47th NC. The charge was repulsed by the Confederates.

What really interests me, is the 26th North Carolina wrote that they found a flag but "Not having the time to stop and get it, we figured the next brigade behind us would claim it." Could this be an Iron Brigade flag or the National flag from the 121st Pa?

Every book on the Iron Brigade all say they did not lose any flags.

I think where I need to go is the Carlisle Barracks in Pennsylvania where these soldiers wrote letters and are stored there.

The 75th Ohio did lose a flag to Hay's night attack. The other three flags mentioned captured by Hay's is still a huge question mark.

Clearly the bulk of Union colors captured were from the 1st and 11th Corps on day 1.

I will continue to search,
