Re: Lynchburg, VA, flag capture

Yes, I know Fort Belvoir. Back in the 80's it was pretty "dead". Now with Walter Reed Army Hospital closing down (September, 2011), most will be either transferred to Bethesda Hospital and Fort Belvoir. They are building like beavers on Fort Belvoir. RT 1 that goes by Fort Belvoir, is being expanded for the increase of traffic that will be there in early 2012.

I found Barringer's HQ flag on the list from the War Department, last year. It did not come with any details on how or who captured it. I was so happy Greg and Ken knew more on this.

Barringer's men were with Hampton on the attack at Ream's Station against 2 divisions (Gibbon and Miles) of the 2nd Corps. Hampton had 5,000 cavalry vs Gregg's 2,000 cavalry force.

Now Hampton reported this is cavalry captured "3 flags" we are still curious to these flags captured.

The 2nd Corps had so many losses during the Overland Campaign that at the battle of Ream's Station only 7,000 men were in Miles's and Gibbon's divisions. With Gregg's 2,000 cavalry men, they had a total of 9,000 men. Heth (Hill was sick) had at least 14,000 men, including Hampton's cavalry.

Has Hancock one wrote "I had never seen my men run before".

Have a good Easter!!
