Re: Union flag captured at Chickamauga

I found one on the "Returned Colors from the War Department".

It was apart of 58 identified colors that the War Department sent back to the respective states.

They had it listed as the "1st Mississippi" capturing the flag. As we know the "1st Mississippi" was not at Chickamauga. They had the Confederate soldiers name who had captured it and I looked that name up on the National Archives soldier/sailor website and turned out that the 21st Mississippi captured the regimental flag.

The other flag of the 21st Wisconsin "National" was also on the War Department's list.

BG. Humphrey's wrote that his brigade captured 4-5 flags. There is not much on the late fighting of the battle. I have many Chickamauga books and none show the "end" fighting. I do know the 21st Wisconsin was one of the last regiments to pull out and they had not heard the order to pull out.

At least 300-400 captured Union flags were in Richmond but the fire destroyed many of the flags and the flags that were saved (215) were then identified or "no history". Many of the flags have no history.

So I am trying to figure out all the Union regiments that fought in that area when Confederate captured the flags.

The Union regimental histories at the LOC have been helpful but many do not mention losing a flag. Even when I know 110% they did, they did not admit to it.

I am curious about Humphrey's report on the other 4-5 flags captured. Could it be the 21st Wisconsin's flank guidons? Or maybe another Union regiment?

I have a zillion questions...

Have a good night,
