Re: 44th Tennessee ANV flag

Hello,

Ben has sent me details of the ANV flag for the 44th Tennessee Infantry taken in May, 1864 at Drewry's Bluff. I had known this flag existed in private hands somewhere but had no details about it until he sent them to me a week ago.

The flag was sold by Bourne Auctions (new defunct) and the tag sewn to the flag states it was taken at Drewry's Bluff. The unit history of the 13th New Hampshire states that they captured the regiment in this battle.

The Hardee flag taken later at Petersburg is the flag they brought with them from Tennessee as part of Bushrod Johnson's Brigade and they used it when their ANV flag, which they received when they reached Virginia (along with uniforms from the Richmond Depot as I found out this past week) when they got to Virginia.

Thanks Ben for sending this flag to me wth the details as it helps fill in a nice hole. The 44th TN also lost a First National at Saylor's Creek in 1865. This was sent to Tennessee as part of the 1905 flag return and it was stolen sometime afetr its arrival it seems as the state no longer has it.
