Re: Elbert A. Prouty, Co. A, 169th NY

Around 200 "Prouty's" fought during the Civil War. We know two were hung. (One by Mosby, family member was in the 5th Michigan Cavalry) (Wallace Prouty, company E). A sign was around his neck that said "Measure for Measure" signed, Mosby.

The other was in the 26th Texas Cavalry and according to the OR report gave information to the enemy. A lynch mob took him out of the jail and hung him on the spot.

Well he did deserve it. The big tragedy was Wallace Prouty. They only knew his name in the OR report because he carried a small pocket bible that had his name inside it.

Elbert Prouty (169th NY) was wounded slightly during the Petersburg Campaign. (Popular Church). Other Prouty's in New York regiments: 24th, 61st, 102nd, 110th, 126th, 141st, 148th, 169th and the 184th.

Have a good weekend,

Shawn Prouty
