Hello Bill,

From the pictures and the measurements this appears to be an original, but with out documented capture info it would be difficult to say which Confederate Regiment this was captured from. As to the number of stars, in dating of Confederate 1st National’s the star count is not like the U.S. flag. According to Howard Madaus research he had documentation of 7, 11, 12, 13, & 15 star Nationals at Mannassas so you can not date a flag by the number of stars. So it is probable that it may have been captured at Falmouth VA as indicated on the index card.

The flag appears to be homemade and may have been a Company flag, not a Regimental. As to honors, you can not distinguish a battle flag by honors, many battle flags do not have honors on them, The cloth ties are common with homemade flags or flags made in the early part of the war.

If you find more information on the flags history I would like to hear from you.

Thanks much for the pictures, sorry I could not be of much help.

Happy Trails!

Tom Martin
