Slight Clarifications, as it generally relates to the Confederate side of the fence.
The color guard was generally 9 men, color bearer (normally regimental flag) who was designated as the Color Sergeant, with the remaining 8 men being corporals. This is in the early part of the war, as troops were reduced in the regiment, color guard would be reduced to 6 men or so (1 color bearer, 5 guards)
VERY early in the war you might find 'Ensigns' (yes this was their rank) in command of the Color Guard, this is when the regiment would have there 'expected' amount of men, about 1,000.
Most of my experience is that on the Confederate side, no one really carried the 'national' colors. Not sure why,
Found this earlier. concerning color bearers that 'ran.' Charles O'Connell was a Corporal in Company B (I believe 8th Louisiana). He was detailed as Color Sergeant on December 12, 1861. He participated in this position up to the Battle of Port Republic. At this battle he acted disgracefully, running off with his colors, for which he was reduced to the ranks. He deserted shortly afterwards. Source of this information is Booth’s Records, which is a not totally complete listing of all soldiers that fought for Louisiana during the War of Northern Aggression.
Hope this helps.
