Darron,

Also mentioned in Pvt Henry McPherson's CMSR, a summary of which is given below:

"Wounded in battle at 2nd Manassas on 8/29/1862. In hospital at Lynchburg, VA. Returned to duty. "Captured a stand of colors [shot Color Corporal Henry Spayd in the leg and seized the colors of the 149th Pennsylvania] on 7/1/1863 at Gettysburg in front of lines. Declined promotion therefor." Killed at The Wilderness on 5/6/1864. He appears on a register of appointments, CSA to Ensign & 1st Lt. Date of appointment: 6/6/1864. To take rank: 5/4/1864 [However, Pvt. McPherson was killed before it could take effect]."

The [bracketed] comments are mine based on additional research and to help clarify the record. The inside quotes are taken directly from the service record. In this particular case, it appears Pvt Mcpherson was appointed to Ensign posthumously.

Regards,

Michael R. Brasher
