Re: 39th Georgia "White Cross Flag"

Mr. Lane,

There are two known surviving battleflags for the 39th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

The first is the Missouri style issued just prior to the siege of Vicksburg. This flag is about the same dimensions as a regular regimental flag. It is rectangular with a red field with a white Latin cross in the staff third of the flag and it was trimmed in yellow fringe. Somehow, this battle flag made it back to the regiment following the Vicksburg surrender. It is believed to have been captured by a Federal officer on Lookout Mountain when he found it in the regimental wagons left atop the mountain when Cumming's Brigade displaced off of the mountain and took up positions along Chattanooga Creek the evening prior to the Battle of Lookout Mountain. This first battle flag is at Panola Mountain State Park outside of Atlanta in the collections of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources-State Parks Division the last time I heard.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,
