Once correction to Jim's post - the CSA rank of Ensign was initiated in 1864 not early in the war. It was rescinded in 1865. YOu can find the orders for both in the Official Records.
This was the same pay and status as a lieuntant but without command privileges. Men for the post had to be recommended and if you check the CSR rolls for CS regiments you can find loads of these letters with great details of color bearers for that unit quite often.
Lastly, there were also ensigns in the early days of the war but these were not for color bearer ranks. Rather, they were an archaic term taken from the British Army and were another name for "third lieutenants" which is how they acted.
