SC Flag found in Fort Magruder

Right after the battle of Williamsburg on May 5th and May 6th, 1862 a flag was found inside Fort Magruder.

OR 11, Series 1, Page 500

The 4th Maine found the flag and their flag was posted on top of the ramparts. Now this flag was not captured, it was left accidentally behind.

The description of the flag:

Blue Silk, Three Feet Square, Crimson Fringe with a White Crescent in upper left corner.

On one side it had "Pickens Sentinels" "Preserve Southern Institution or Perish with them." January 10th, 1861.

On the other side, "Palmetto Tree encircled by a Serpent with 7 stars." Motto: "Animis opibusque parati."

(Prepared in mind and resources.)

Well this very much sounds like a South Carolina flag. Knowing that Longstreet's division was in the battle of Williamsburg, sounds like Colonel Micah Jenkins' Brigade. Jenkin's men were the only South Carolina troops at the battle.

5th SC
6th SC
Palmetto Sharpshooters
4th SC "Battalion" (old 4th SC Infantry Regiment)

Well let me know what you think of this flag and who it belonged too.

Have a good morning!
