The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: War Department 1888 Union list

There is some kind of conspiracy going on at the Library of Congress. For having "the world's largest library" and the "world's largest law library" we found nothing. Zilch. No letter, no book, nothing. Even the staff searched.

Now, "Battle flags captured and recaptured by O.W. Bennett (1890) with 31 pages, was the book checked out back in August 1996. Never came back. Oddly they do not even have a second copy.

I asked to see who was in charge, I told the gentleman to delete those two books off the database. If you don't have the books, why still keep it on the database?? Why do you not keep a second copy of these books???

I am going to check the Fredericksburg Regional Library tomorrow and see what they have. If that does not work out then I will go down to Richmond's Eleanor Brockenbrough Library.

I think some old Union veteran ghost is roaming the LOC and hiding the books, lol.

Now when I checked "Google advanced books," the War Department had 726 total flags.

511 Rebel Flags
215 Union Flags

What is interesting they claimed to have only identified "51 Union flags." But I found "58" on the microfilm, two years ago and posted the findings on here awhile ago.

Now 274 Rebel flags were returned to the South. But that is odd.

Listings of returned flags by the War Department to the states.
