What is odd at Fredericksburg, Anderson's division reported capturing a flag from the Irish Brigade. (War Department returned Union flags.) But Kershaw in his OR reported the 69th NY Guidon and that "McClellan" style flag.
Knowing that Anderson's division at Fredericksburg was on the far left and the 69th New York was the extreme right regiment of the Irish Brigade (no support on the right.) makes sence. But what flag? The Guidon was captured the "McClellan" style flag captured so that just leaves, the National flag.
In BG. Meagher's OR report on Fredericksburg he wrote that he rallied the men on the 63rd New York's National Flag. Just that flag. But that does not mean all the other flags were captured, or does it?
As you all know only the 28th Massachusetts had a "Green Flag" at Fredericksburg. Even that was captured, but Mike Sullivan (Irishman in Cobb's Brigade) returned the flag personally to BG. Meagher.
I think many more flags were captured at Fredericksburg. I also believe more Confederate flags were captured by Meade as well.
Have a good weekend!
