That was from a press release we did in June. SOme clarification is in order however.
The Tennessee State Museum never had 57 TN Union flags so we are not missing them. What this was about is our search for TN Union flags since you can't find them today even with a search warrant! Three were sent back in 1905 from the War Department that were retkane when Richmond fell and even those are missing.
Some got sent to the Jeffersonville, IN depot after the war and have since gone missing while others were, no doubt, reclaimed by their officers and taken home to protect them since the former Confedrates had returned to political power by 1867. Since TN had been largely overrun in 1862, it was one of the first states to be considered "reconstructed" and the feeling must have been that these former adversaires would take and destroy the flags that had been ordered to be sent to the state by Adjutant General James Brownlow in June, 1865.
So that's the mystery of the missing TN Union flags in a nutshell but the museum, once again, never had them to lose.
