Just saw a reference to a book called Bees in America by Jennifer Horn (?) that mentioned honey bees during the Civil War. It said the 72nd Penn. (Zouave) Inf. adopted the honeybee as a mascot for its left general guide marker. It says this marker was donated by one of the soldiers to the state in 1930.
I saw some discussion on general guides and thought this might be of interest.
