Indeed he would be appalled at the status of the "Embattled Flag". I haven't read the book you mentioned...yet. I've been collecting Howitzer Company recollections and diaries of late. A fascinating unit. Captain B.H. Smith of the Third Company was brought up on charges after Gettysburg for not being aggressive enough in exposing himself (and battery) to the enemy on 3 July before Pickett's Charge. Charges were dismissed after further investigation. The Third Company received (4) three inch ordnance rifles just before their trip to Pennsylvania. And they are credited with the first use of the Parrott Rifle in battle at Bethel Church (Big Bethel). Thanks for your input and your compliments on our website. Still needs some work but it is pretty good. ;-) I'll keep a watch out for these modern day guys. I'm not sure how I'll handle being in the company of all that brass. hahahaha.
