Question for Gregg Biggs (Van Dorn pattern flags)

Gregg,

I have a quick question that I'm sure you can answer. There is some confusion as to what Missouri units were flying Van Dorn pattern flags in the fall of 1862? I was under the impression that only the Missouri units in Price's Army of the West (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th MO Infty) received these banners sometime after they crossed the Mississippi River in the late spring or summer of 1862, perhaps later. The question is, did any of the Missouri units that were recruited west of the river after the Pea Ridge Campaign carry such flags? While the 10th, 11th, 12th, 16th MO Infty and Pindall's MO SS Battalion received their distinctive Latin Cross flags in April 1863, I was always under the impression that these units carried 1st national pattern banners at Prairie Grove, AR (December 7, 1862). Is there any documentation as to when, where, and to whom the Van Dorn pattern flags were issued?

Best regards.

Bill
