Re: Question for Gregg Biggs (Van Dorn pattern fla

Hi Bill,

The Missouri Brigade got their Van Dorn flags in June, 1862 made by the ladies of Guntown, Mississippi. These had fringed exterior borders and the stars were not in the more familiar 3-2-3-2-3 arrangement that the Van Dorn flags of late August, 1862 had. We suspect that the later Van Dorn flags were made in Jaclkson, MS.

The flag of the 6th Missouri survives and is currently on display in the visitor's center at Corinth, MS for the National Park. The only other known Vand Dorn flag from this issue is that of the 4th Missouri and it is in the collections of the Museum of the Confederacy.

I think you might be confusing these flags with the February, 1863 Bowen flag that were blue with a white Latin cross and red borders that many other Missouri (and otehr regiments) carried from then until 1864.

Hope this helps.
