I did some more digging into this incident and it was the 8th Illinois that received the fire from the 25th Kentucky. The 8th was not coming off the line at the time - they were still in line of battle with Confederates to their front and right flank.

Pretty much all of the books on Ft. Donelson talk of this incident.
