Correction flag of Union Veteran Reserve Corps

The flags of Hancock’s 1st Veteran Army Corps are not the same as those of the Invalid/Reserve Corps.

Hancock’s 1st Veteran Army Corps was not fully organized, as General Hancock was transferred to Command the Department of West Virginia before organization was finished.

General Orders #105 dated April 28, 1863, General Orders# 124 dated May 15, 1863 and General Orders# 111 dated March 18, 1864, deal with the organization, uniforms, weapons, etc., of the Invalid/Reserve Corps. The Invaled/Reserve Corps was not a true Crops as defined by the U.S. Army organization of the period. Sort a like to days Veterinary Corps or Judge Advocate Corps. I don’t know if they had a Corps flags as the 1st Veteran Army Corps or the other Corps of the Army did but they did receive a Stand of Colors on the Regimental level. Several National and Regimental flags of the Veteran Reserve Corps do survive. The flags were made by the usual major makers for the deferent Depots.

The Confederate’s also organized a Invalid Corps in 1864 but I don’t have research data on them yet. If anyone has information on their flags I would be interested hearing from you. I suspect the flags would have been standard depot issues.

Happy Trails!
